In an interview with Eurogamer, co-founder and chief executive Mike Morhaime rebuked claims that the videogames market for the PC platform was drying up.
He believes it’s ”just completely dead wrong” to think of it as declining, that only ”PC retail” looks gloomy and even then he thinks that it’s ”just flat,” and not ”declining very much.”
”PC is the gaming platform with the largest installed base around the world. It’s also the platform with the best margins,” he added.
Micro-transactions, subscriptions, advertising and digital downloads are all gaining greater momentum but aren’t taken into consideration when it comes to estimating the PC games market.
This ‘feeling’ of decline was based solely on the analysis of retail sales which is wrong, something that both Morhaime and Valve’s head plumber Gabe Newell strongly agree on.
”I agree with a lot of Gabe’s comments,” said Morhaime. ”I think that it is just completely dead wrong to think about the PC gaming market and conclude that it’s a declining market. It is far from declining.”
”If you look at the numbers, there are probably more people playing games on the PC than any other platform. More than there ever have been before. If you look at the revenue, it’s also growing. It’s only not growing if all you’re looking at is PC retail, and even then, I think it’s just flat, I don’t think it’s declining very much,” he said.
Despite Blizzard’s seemingly staunch support of the PC’s might, Morhaime doesn’t rule out a possible console project in the future ”if it was appropriate for the game,” he commented.
