NCSoft’s Lineage II uses Epic’s previous prodigy the Unreal Engine 2 so they’re no strangers when it comes to licensing. Now they’ve gone and formed a two-game deal with Epic, they’ll be using the latest engine to development a couple of new and unannounced MMOs.
UE3 is used in Epic’s own Gears of War and UT3, they predict their next instalment of the engine will be near exclusive to the next generation of consoles.
Young-muk Choi, Development Unit lead programmer at NCSoft, complimented the Unreal Engine 3 for its ”well structured rendering pipeline” and on its ”advanced lighting and shadowing systems.”
The Unreal Engine 3 is certainly a powerful beast, any who’ve played Unreal Tournament 3 or Gears of War can attest to that. Though an MMO won’t be able to fully utilise the power of Epic’s creation they should still be able to get an awful lot out of it.
