Striking neon lights and towering advertisements pierce the darkness surrounding the world of cyberpunk RPG Alpha Spectrum, which, following a devastating cyberattack, has been thrown into chaos. Taking on the role of a CIA agent capable of wielding psionic powers, we set off to discover who caused the devastation and to what end.
The work of solo developer InspiRational Games, Alpha Spectrum explores a near-future version of our own world in which humanity has grown “dangerously dependent on technology and social media.”
Alpha Spectrum
Promising a mix of story-driven RPG elements, fast-paced action-RPG combat, and immersive sim levels of flexibility, Alpha Spectum’s isometric adventure spans no less than 14 explorable open zones, which include major cities such as New York, Moscow, Shanghai, and Baghdad.
Its fully voice-acted story campaign explores the impact of cybersecurity threats in a heavily connected world, not unlike our own. Spanning between twelve and eighteen hours, depending on playstyle, it promises a significant amount of player choice, multiple endings, and plenty of freedom in how we approach completing our mission.
Alpha Spectrum never holds our hand, asking us to pay attention to its writing and environments in order to discover the path forward. The vast majority of its objectives can be completed in any order, using a blend of approaches.
Sometimes, our psionic powers are the swiftest way to overcome obstacles by swiftly dispatching foes in fast-paced action-RPG-inspired combat encounters. Other situations may be dealt with more efficiently using a combination of stealth and hacking.
Although stealth does pave the way to completing missions more silently by relying on a cover system and active abilities that enable creating diversions, it is an optional addition. Would-be assassins can master it, while those who aren’t too keen about sneaking around still have a suite of other options to embrace.
Alpha Spectrum’s skill-based combat system is bolstered by a talent tree that unlocks new abilities, modifiers, and alternative variants, prioritizing creativity and flexibility over the pursuit of a single correct combination of abilities.
Alpha Spectrum’s lore is then expanded upon in books, newspapers, emails, and audio logs we discover while exploring its locations, painting a more complete picture of its alternative version of our own reality.
Developed with “no external investment or funding,” while its solo developer held a full-time job, Alpha Spectrum “aims to prove that an engaging experience can be created without relying on significant financial resources, by sticking to a vision and thinking outside the box.”
Alpha Spectrum is slated to release on PC, via Steam, in September 2026. You can wishlist it now.
