The eight best League of Legends teams in the world are set to descend upon Wembley Arena over the next four days to play out the quarterfinals of the League of Legends World Championships. Four teams will advance to the semi-finals that are due to be played in just over a week over in Brussels, while the remaining four teams will be out of the competition. For those of you who aren’t overly knowledgeable about the intricacies of competitive League of Legends or even just those who haven’t been watching the group stages of Worlds over the last couple of weeks we are here to bring you up to speed with the teams to look out for and what we can expect to see this weekend at Wembley.
Origen vs Flash Wolves
Each day of the event will see a single best of five series played between two teams. The first two teams to go against each other on Thursday 15th are Origen and Flash Wolves with the first game scheduled to start around 5pm UK time. Flash Wolves are from the LMS, the Taiwan based branch of the competitive League of Legends circuit, where they have been one of the top teams since their formation in 2013. In the group stage they ended up topping group A, beating out the likes of Counter Logic Gaming and KOO Tigers to make the quarter finals. While they are a strong side very few people are tipping them to go all the way, with many not expecting them to make it any further in the competition.
Their opponents are Origen, a European squad formed just a year ago who have only been in the EU LCS proper for one split, meaning they had to fight through the European regional qualifier to even make it to Worlds. They surprised many by making it through one of the harder groups, coming second to KT Rolster with a 4-2 win loss record and beating what many considered to be a strong contender LGD Gaming. Again very few are tipping Origen to make it to the finals meaning this should be one of the closer matches of the weekend.
SKTelecom T1 vs ahq e-Sports Club
Friday’s action will see SKTelecom T1 take on ahq e-Sports Club in what should be a very entertaining game. SKTelecom are one of the more favoured teams to take the overall victory at Worlds, having had very strong performances over the last year and having topped Group C by going undefeated. The Korean side have looked on top of their game throughout the worlds group stage and as a result it makes it hard not to expect them to pull out a win here.
However Taiwan’s top seed ahq e-Sports Club will have something to say about that. They came second in group B, just beating out fan favourites Cloud 9 to make it into the next round. ahq certainly go into this one as the underdogs, but that doesn’t mean they should be counted out entirely. They are more than capable of performing at the highest level, their wins against the likes of Fnatic and Cloud 9 prove that, and with a bit of luck could easily knock out SKTelecom.
Fnatic vs Edward Gaming
Both Fnatic and Edward Gaming have been tipped as possible finalists throughout the last year. Fnatic went undefeated in the EU LCS season, only dropping games as the playoffs rolled around while Edward Gaming had a phenomenal start to the year, reaching the final of the Mid season invitational, but losing a bit of pace as World’s started to draw closer. Out of all the action at Wembley this match is perhaps the one that most people are looking forward to. Fnatic will undoubtedly be the crowd favourites, featuring a squad with a few European players and the organisation being based in the UK. They topped group B only dropping two games, and are performing consistently, something that is key in a long event such as Worlds.
Edward Gaming made it out of Group C as expected, coming second to the undefeated SKTelecom T1, only dropping games to the Korean squad. They had a fairly disappointing end to the regular Chinese season, but many still have them as one of the top contenders for worlds. Their form may not be as good as it was earlier in the year but the quality is still there and they could easily end up smashing Fnatic 3-0 if they turn up. The match between the two teams is set to start at 2pm UK time on Saturday.
KOO Tigers vs KT Rolster
The final match of the League of Legends Worlds Quarterfinals sees KOO Tigers take on KT Rolster. The all Korean affair, will see the two sides that know each other very well face off for a place in the semi-finals in what should be an incredibly entertaining and close game. KOO Tigers ended up finishing as the 2nd place Korean seed prior to worlds, and easily made it out of Group A with a 4-2 record. While generally not considered to be on quite the same level as first Korean seed SKTelecom T1, they are more than capable of defeating the top teams when they are on form and with a good run could make their way to the final.
KT Rolster may have come in as the third Korean seed but that doesn’t mean they are a bad team, in fact many have tipped them to be one of the finalists in an all-Korean final. They comfortably topped their group, which many referred to as the group of death, only dropping a single game to Origen. This all Korean quarterfinal matchup should offer up some incredibly high level competition and could end up being the match of the week as both teams know each other incredibly well so may have to pull out some new strategies to try and come out on top.
All the action is set to take place in the Wembley arena from 5pm UK time on Thursday and Friday while things kick off a little earlier at 2pm UK time on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the event have unfortunately sold out, but you will be able to watch all the action on the Twitch Stream. After the quarter finals have taken place the four remaining teams will head to Brussels and then the two finalists head to Berlin on October 31st to see who will be crowned 2015 League of Legends World Champions.
