The UK’s BBC conducted a little video poke around at Ubisoft Reflections in Newcastle, where they report the team is ”working on a whole new version” of Driver.
A later clip centred on the UK industry struggling from overseas tax breaks reiterates the studio is working on ”the latest version of a popular driving game”.
Not exactly the source many envisioned but Ubisoft seems to have been caught out as they seemed to scramble to find out what went on. Sure enough the publisher came back with a deafening ‘no comment’, they craftily dug up some old lines from Yves Guillemot, Ubi CEO.
”We are thrilled with this acquisition which will allow us to add a prestigious title to our catalog and to enter into the driving games segment, one of the most important segments in the gaming industry. With more than 14 million units sold throughout the world, Driver is one of the most successful brands in the history of video games. We look forward to leveraging the unique knowledge of the Ubisoft studios to ensure that Driver will be one of the leading brands of the next generation of consoles,” said Guillemot, back in 2006.
They added a note stating that ”nothing more specific than this has been said,” on the Driver franchise from Ubisoft. The first video from the BBC did show cars bring modelled as well as character designs being put through their paces for cut-scenes.
I can still remember the first Driver game and how hilarious it was activating fast cars. Hopefully Ubi will unveil something at E3 now that the cat has wheel spun out of the bag.
